14:09  JECK: TOKYO (Thomson Financial) - Japan's merchandise trade surplus fell for the second straight month in December as higher crude oil prices inflated imports and exports to the US dropped for the fourth month in a row, the Ministry of Finance said Thursday.

The trade surplus dropped 20.9 percent to 877.87 billion yen from a year earlier, smaller than the market's consensus forecast for a surplus of 926.9 billion yen.

The fall followed a 12.2 percent decline in November.

"Higher oil prices largely pushed up imports while Japan's domestic demand itself remained stagnant, and this trend is likely to continue as oil prices are expected to stay in a high range," said Junko Sakuyama, an economist at Dai-ichi Life Research Institute. Imports increased 12.1 percent to a record 6.559 trillion yen as the average price of crude oil rose 54.6 percent to a record 90.60 dollars per barrel. The previous record was 81.10 dollars per barrel, which was only reached in November.

The government is scheduled to release the preliminary GDP data for the period on February 14. Exports to the US fell 4.5 percent in December. This was the first time that shipments to the US had fallen four months in a row, the longest decline since a 14-month drop until February 2004. Exports of motorbikes to the US dropped 40.1 percent, while shipments of auto parts fell 10.4 percent and deliveries of construction equipment to the US dropped 31.2 percent.

"Overall exports, however, maintained their rising trend as brisk exports to China, the EU and oil producing nations more than offset the decline in exports to the US," a ministry official said.

Economists said that Japan's exports are expected to increase, but the pace of growth may slow during the first half of this year because of weak demand from the US, although they don't see the US entering a recession.

"We forecast that GDP in the US will grow at the 1.0 percent level for the first and the second quarter of this year and will recover to the 2.0 percent level of growth during the last two quarters, while Japan's shipments to the US are expected to recover as well," he said.

EU a concern Analysts said a slowdown in shipments to the EU is also a concern, but the economy there is unlikely to deteriorate like the US.

Exports to the EU rose 2.4 percent, rising for the 26th straight month, on increased sales of autos and auto parts.
